This ferrocerium rod fire steel is of a harder alloy, which means it will last longer and be more challenging to produce a spark from. I strongly suggest practice well before use is needed, use a file to create a sharp edge to the striker and a bur on the edge of the striker. Use the burred edge of the striker to tear metal from the alloy rod. Alternatively, use a bit of old rasp or file as a substitute sticker.
Beginners should perhaps buy a more expensive softer alloy fire steel that is easier to use. A fire steel will still work if wet, but ferro means iron so it will also corrode in moist environments. It can be repainted with clear varnish or even nail polish to seal against corrosion if used in a wet or humid environment (especially if use is infrequent). It is disappointing if corrosion has eaten chunks out of your fire steel when you haven’t used it for a while.

Very well-made ferrocereium. Small size, ideal as an alternative fire source if your lighter or matches get wet. What caught my attention is that it comes with a rope to hold it and even two rubber gaskets to ensure its tightness and prevent it from getting wet.
